Goat in jail after stealing car

Police in Nigeria are holding a goat handed to them by a vigilante group, which said it was a car thief who had used witchcraft to change shape.

A police spokesman in Kwara State has been quoted as saying that the “armed robbery suspect” would remain in custody until investigations were over.

But another police spokesman told the BBC the goat was being held in case its owner claimed it.

The belief in witchcraft and the power to change shapes is common in Nigeria.

Police reform activists have condemned the “arrest”, saying it highlights the low education levels of many Nigerian police officers.

Nigeria’s Vanguard newspaper has a picture of the goat and reports that police paraded it in front of journalists in the Kwara state capital Ilorin on Thursday.

But this was denied by national police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu.

“The vigilante group arrested the goat and took it to the police, then they told the media.”

The next morning journalists turned up demanding to see the goat, he said.

“But of course goats can’t commit crime.”

Incompetent

The BBC’s Andrew Walker in Abuja says communities often rely on ill-educated and badly prepared vigilante squads to fill the gaps where the police will not patrol at night.

Innocent Chukwuma of the justice reform group the Cleen Foundation, told the BBC that many Nigerian police officers were poorly educated.

“There are officers who don’t even have a secondary school education, and the police have a big job to do in finding these people and getting rid of them.”

He said in the past political leaders had allowed the police to be filled with incompetent and in some cases criminal officers so they could be easily bought to protect their own criminal activities.

Police have also been unable to stop vigilante squads from lynching suspects before they could investigate, he said.

An American who worked as a high school teacher was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of growing and possessing cannabis at his home in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, in violation of the Cannabis Control Law, police said. Wesley Walker, 37, admitted to the allegations and was quoted as telling investigators that he knew it was cannabis but kept growing it because he is a plant lover.

According to police investigations, he possessed a potted cannabis plant and some 10 grams of marijuana around Nov 12 last year. Wesley had been teaching English at a private high school in Sagamihara in the prefecture until November last year. Police said they confiscated pipes and other equipment from his home in connection with the case.

Woman hit by car, then stabbed by driver

A woman walking along a road in Ota City at 5 p.m. on Wednesday was hit by an oncoming car and then stabbed with a kitchen knife by the driver of the vehicle, police said Thursday.

Kanai Mobara, 36, a nurse and resident of Ota City, was stabbed several times in the back but her injuries were not life-threatening, police said. The man stabbed himself in the abdomen, and was also taken to hospital, where he is in critical condition. Police believe him to be a 35-year-old unemployed man who lives near the scene of the attack. Mobara told police she had never met the man.

Man arrested for scattering hundreds of worms inside train in Osaka

A man was arrested Monday in the act of spreading hundreds of worms inside a train running across Osaka Prefecture, local police said. Manabu Mizuta, a 35-year-old company employee who is suspected of deliberately obstructing railway operations by his act, was quoted as saying, ‘‘It was fun to watch other passengers freak out when they looked at the creepy worms.’’

At the time of his arrest, Mizuta had about 3,600 worms contained in small, photographic film cases in his bag, the police said. The incident took place as the train was traveling on the Keihan line through the city of Neyagawa around 10:05 a.m. The suspect, a resident of Hyogo Prefecture, is believed to have scattered about 200 mealworms, the larva of the darkling beetle, a feeder insect for birds.

63 yo man kidnaps 13 yo girl in Japan

A 63-year-old man was arrested Friday on suspicion of holding a 16-year-old female high school student captive in his home in Kihoku, Mie Prefecture, police said. Hajime Ichikawa allegedly confined the girl in his home from Thursday afternoon to Friday, and called her family from her mobile phone to demand a ransom, according to the investigation.

‘‘I have your daughter in my hands. Prepare 3 million yen,’’ he was quoted as telling her mother over the phone. ‘‘Don’t report to the police or anybody, otherwise your daughter will die.’’ The girl called her mother by herself Friday morning from the mobile phone, enabling the police to locate the site where she was being held captive by tracing back the mobile signal.

The girl once learned how to use the abacus at Ichikawa’s home, according to police.

TOKYO - A homeless woman who sneaked into a man's house and lived undetected in his closet for a year was arrested in Japan after he became suspicious when food mysteriously began disappearing.

Police found the 58-year-old woman Thursday hiding in the top compartment of the man's closet and arrested her for trespassing, police spokesman Hiroki Itakura from southern Kasuya town said Friday.

The resident of the home installed security cameras that transmitted images to his mobile phone after becoming puzzled by food disappearing from his kitchen over the past several months.

One of the cameras captured someone moving inside his home Thursday after he had left, and he called police believing it was a burglar. However, when they arrived they found the door locked and all windows closed.

"We searched the house ... checking everywhere someone could possibly hide," Itakura said. "When we slid open the shelf closet, there she was, nervously curled up on her side."

The woman told police she had no place to live and first sneaked into the man's house about a year ago when he left it unlocked.

She had moved a mattress into the small closet space and even took showers, Itakura said, calling the woman "neat and clean."

Today is actor Jensen Ackles' 30th birthday. Damn, he's old. But, unlike many people around his age, he's still got. Hells yes. Look at that hotness.

Jensen is best known for his role on the CW's Supernatural. I've been following this show since its conception back in 2005. I own both of the previous seasons on DVD & you can bet that when season 3 comes out, I'll be there to get buy it.

6 months is hardly enough

Today marks 6 months since Gael and I started going out. Woo hoo! It's weird because it seems like it's been ages since we started dating but at the same time it feels like barely any time has passed. Weird.

In preparation for a special little dinner, we went to Global Foods (for which I could not find a link but it's an international grocery store around here) to find the ingredients for Thai Curry (with coconut milk!). Whilst there, I found this bottle which amused me greatly:

(oh also, I've been playing around with Adobe Photoshop 8 a lot that's why there's a little thingy at the bottom. it's from a brush i downloaded- where from i have no idea. >_<)

Also, I believe I've finished updating the layout for Collateral Damage. I don't think I have the time or patience to really change anything else. Oh well! ^_^

I'm starting to get a migraine but that's okay. I'm trying to leave at noon and it's more convincing to "fake sick" if I actually feel like crap. It's supposed to be 65* here today & I want to go & hang out in the woods with my boyfriend today. Show him this spot where I used to hide when I ran away as a kid (Civil War train stop). No way I wanna spend all day cooped up in my cubicle (actually, I'm getting moved to a desk in about an hour) when it's that nice outside!

So, the point of this post... I'm not a very good cook. I think this is from lack of trying rather than lack of aptitude. One day I was feeling okay so I decided to make up some random chicken dish and cook it. It turned out great!

A few weeks ago I received a packet in the mail welcoming me to Aetna Health care. "What say ye?!" I asked myself aloud. "Why am I with Aetna instead of the portal to hell (aka Kaiser Permanente)?" Well, I contacted my HR (human resources) woman and asked her. She said that they had sent out some packet asking me to go over my health insurance and change things if needed. I vaguely remembered getting a packet such as she mentioned but ignored it since I assumed that if I did nothing, they'd just keep me with what I had. Not so!
I was directed to call some service center and they informed me that my birth date was wrong in the system so I had to email my HR lady again and ask her to update it. Only she's out. So I had to contact someone in New Jersey (I'm near DC) and have her change it. Finally it's all fixed. So I'm all good, right?

No.

Apparently it would take them up to 3 weeks to finalise the "change" back to my original health care. Why, I don't know. Kaiser Permanente sucks. Common knowledge here in the States. I'm so aggravated because tomorrow I give my 2 weeks notice to my job and I still have 2 prescriptions that I need to fill. Apparently this has to be done by 31 December 2007.

Ok, you suck world. I can deal. But what really pisses me off is this:

I am not allowed to cancel my health insurance.

So, I'm not even going to be using my health insurance yet I have to keep paying for it. What kind of bullshit is this? I'm rather confused and I have no idea why. Apparently it's some "government regulation." So, they don't see fit to provide us with health insurance yet they make us pay for it if we don't want it? What kind of shit country is this? God, I can't wait to leave corporate America!

Yup. I'm actually at work today. BS, huh? Lame, huh? I think so. Joke's on you, stupid workplace! I'm dippin' out on Wednesday! So ha! Suckas. They'll probably be mad, too. We close the year on Friday but think I care? No, not really.

I have a question- who listens to Japanese music? Who has heard of LEO今井 (Leo Imai)? They keep playing him on the 2008年ブレイク候補アーティスト station on Yahoo! radio Japan. I'm obsessed. I can't find his music anywhere (well, I did find a CD on Amazon.com for like 30$ which isn't bad for import) for under 40$! Insane! If you know how to find his music (old and new) please let me know! Must. Have. Leo. Imai's. music.

I suppose I should pretend to be hard at work so the boss will let us leave super early. Then it's off to my boyfriend's house for Christmas movies, hot chocolate, aaaand snuggle- time! I love snuggle- time. ^_^

Coolest random gift

I got the coolest random gift from a coworker of mine the other day. Here's 2 pictures I took at my desk (they're kind of shaky because I was afraid I'd get caught apparently "stealing secrets" that I'm not even aware of):

Cool! I'm really stoked for that roll of 120 film. I'll probably stick it in my Holga and take lots of pictures. (Past pictures taken on my Holga here.)

By the way- who has Monday (the 24th) off? If you do, I automatically hate you. Why? Because I'll be here, at work, probably helping the file clerk match backups of checks to the paperwork. FUN.

I recently bought myself some books. Thought I am already fairly up- to- date on what's going on in the following manga because it was being serialised in Shojo Beat, I have decided to buy NANA in graphic novel form. This weekend, I bought volumes one & two. I also bought my second book by Japanese author Ryu Murakami, 69. So far, so good. I really want the rest of the NANA manga, though. I think in the US we have up to 8 or 9 volumes.

It's a little fuzzy because I took it at close range on my cell but it'll do. Here's a small example of how stupid and uneducated the people I work with are.

The girl that wrote this is my group leader who was born and raised in the USA. You'd think she'd have at least a vague grasp of the English language and some basic spelling and grammar skills. Apparently not! Maybe everyone else should go back to school as well. ; ]

How many of you get aggravated with your coworkers on a daily basis? How many of you have to explain very simple things to them nearly every day? I do.

There's this girl here who, while she hasn't been working here very long should know the basics and general rules. Let's see:

~ I've marked something in the workstation as me doing it. She goes ahead and does it so a lot of work gets duplicated. I email her informing her of her mistake and her excuse is, "I didn't see your name on it." There is only 1 box to check that says "___ has reviewed request." One box. It's really not that difficult.
~ There are certain types of work we all do. I never touch hers even if she hasn't marked it because I know she deals with those jobs especially. She knows what jobs I do. She will occasionally take my work that is allocated to me specifically. Sometimes her excuse is, "I didn't know, sorry." (Except she rarely uses correct sentence structure or verb form.) She does know what I do. We're all aware of what jobs each person on our team is assigned to do so as to not cause confusion and duplicate work.

I'm so tired of having to deal with this girl. She's driving me out of my mind.

Aside from that, there's this issue that I got in "trouble" for having a link at the end of my emails to Stop Global Warming. Apparently this could be "offensive" to some so I was commanded to delete it. Yet, she has a Bible verse at the end of her emails and no one says anything. I think I'm going to complain because while the Bible is a good book, etc if I can't even have a link to encourage people to help with the global climate issue, she shouldn't be allowed to have religious stuff up. I think that'd be more controversial than global warming! Sheesh!

Actually, I've been sending out resumes and applying for jobs lately so I can work part time and do school full time. I had forgotten how annoying and hard it is to find a job. At least, it's always been that way for me. I hope I find a new job by the time the spring semester starts (Jan 14th)!
